Introduction

The Sturgeon Bay sighting of May 1952 became one of the first major tests of the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO), which Jim and Coral Lorenzen had founded only months earlier in Wisconsin. The case mattered not because it produced decisive proof of an unknown craft, but because it showed how APRO hoped to investigate UFO reports: gather multiple witnesses, compare observations from different locations, estimate altitude and size through triangulation, and challenge official explanations when they seemed incomplete. The same case also exposed the limits of that approach. APRO tried to turn eyewitness accounts into measurements, yet those measurements depended on assumptions that could not be independently verified. The result was a case that became influential in UFO research while remaining open to more conventional explanations. The case that tested APRO’s methods

By the spring of 1952, Coral Lorenzen was living in Sturgeon Bay and working as a journalist. On the evening of 21 May 1952, she arrived in the town centre and found people gathered along Third Avenue looking towards the north-east sky. In later accounts she described a silver, elongated object visible above Door County. Witnesses reported that it moved slowly and remained visible for a long period rather than flashing briefly across the sky. According to Lorenzen’s recollection, the object attracted enough attention that local residents, newspaper staff and police personnel became involved in observing it. For APRO, this was not simply another sighting report. It occurred in the same town where the organisation had recently been established. Instead of merely collecting testimony after the event, Lorenzen attempted an organised investigation while the object was still visible. That effort became a model for how APRO would handle later reports across the United States. One detail that stands out in Lorenzen’s account is her immediate search for additional observers. Rather than relying solely on the crowd gathered on Third Avenue, she contacted local police through the radio network and tried to find officers positioned farther north in Door County. The goal was straightforward: if observers in two separate locations recorded the object’s position against the sky, APRO might estimate its distance and altitude. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "(1966) Coral Lorenzen Flying Saucers, The…” Third Avenue, the main street in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, w…

This was a significant departure from the more common UFO reporting style of the period, which often consisted of a single witness statement followed by speculation. APRO’s founders believed that multiple independent observations could move a case beyond anecdote. The organisation’s early bulletins repeatedly stressed witness interviews, location checks and attempts at reconstruction. The Sturgeon Bay incident became one of the first examples in which Lorenzen tried to apply those principles in real time. The witnesses APRO relied upon were not presented merely as members of the public. Lorenzen emphasised that some observers included police officers and military veterans, arguing that their experience made them more reliable judges of direction and angular position. That reasoning became a recurring feature of APRO investigations, which often highlighted witness credentials as part of a case’s evidential strength. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "(1966) Coral Lorenzen Flying Saucers, The…” Third Avenue, the main street in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, w…

How APRO turned observations into measurements

The most ambitious part of the investigation was the attempt at triangulation. Witnesses in Sturgeon Bay and observers farther north around Fish Creek were asked to estimate the object’s position in the sky. By comparing those observations, Lorenzen and her colleagues attempted to calculate its altitude and dimensions. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "(1966) Coral Lorenzen Flying Saucers, The…” Third Avenue, the main street in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, w…

Triangulation, size estimates and assumptions

APRO’s calculations reportedly produced dramatic figures. Lorenzen later wrote that the object could have been roughly 40 miles above the Earth and hundreds of feet across, with estimates approaching 780 feet in diameter. Such numbers helped make the case notable within early UFO literature because they implied something much larger and higher than a conventional aircraft. However, those figures depended on several assumptions:

  • Witnesses had to estimate angles in the sky accurately.
  • Observers in different locations had to be looking at exactly the same object.
  • The object’s apparent position had to be recorded correctly.
  • Small errors in observation could produce very large changes in estimated size and altitude.

These weaknesses are not unique to APRO. They affect many attempts to reconstruct distant aerial sightings. Yet the Sturgeon Bay case demonstrates how difficult it was for civilian investigators to convert human perception into precise measurements. Without photographs, radar data or instrument readings, the calculations remained heavily dependent on eyewitness judgement. Even so, the effort reveals something important about APRO’s identity. The organisation was not content simply to catalogue strange reports. It wanted to apply geometry, witness comparison and investigative procedure to sightings that most authorities dismissed. In that sense, the Sturgeon Bay case became a prototype for APRO’s later work. Why the balloon explanation became central

The strongest conventional explanation emerged quickly. General Mills, which operated high-altitude balloon programmes during the period, stated that one of its research balloons could have been responsible for what people saw over Door County. The company had been involved in the Skyhook programme, which launched large plastic balloons into the upper atmosphere for scientific and military research. At first glance, several features matched the reports. Skyhook balloons could reach extreme altitudes, appear metallic in sunlight and take on elongated or oval shapes depending on viewing conditions. They were also responsible for a number of famous UFO reports during the late 1940s and early 1950s. [Wikipedia]WikipediaSkyhook balloonSkyhook balloon

Lorenzen did not accept the balloon explanation as fully satisfactory. She argued that some witness descriptions, particularly references to a bright reddish glow beneath the object, were not adequately addressed in the public explanation. She also maintained that the observational estimates from multiple witnesses deserved more consideration than they received. Sceptics reached a different conclusion. They noted that large high-altitude balloons can appear unusual at sunset, when changing illumination can create colour effects and make an object seem self-luminous. They also pointed out that APRO’s size estimates depended entirely on the triangulation calculations, meaning that any error in witness angles could dramatically distort the result. A balloon at a different altitude than assumed could appear far larger or far smaller than APRO’s reconstruction suggested. The case therefore sits in an unresolved middle ground. It was not conclusively identified at the time, but neither did it produce evidence strong enough to rule out a balloon. Modern discussions of the incident often focus less on the object itself than on the investigative process that surrounded it. What the Sturgeon Bay case reveals about APRO

The lasting significance of the Sturgeon Bay sighting lies in what it reveals about early civilian UFO research in Wisconsin. APRO attempted to build a method around witness interviews, cross-checking locations and elementary measurement. Compared with casual newspaper reporting, that represented a more systematic approach. Compared with professional scientific investigation, however, it still faced severe limitations because it relied almost entirely on human observation. [Encyclopedia.com]encyclopedia.comaerial phenomena research organization aproAerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO)Founded in January 1952 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, to conduct investigations and research i…Published: January 1952

The case also highlights a tension that would follow APRO throughout its history. The organisation sought scientific credibility, yet it often worked with evidence that could not be independently tested after the fact. The Sturgeon Bay investigation showed both sides of that ambition. APRO demonstrated a genuine effort to gather data rather than rumours, but the final conclusions rested on assumptions that remained open to dispute. Within Wisconsin’s UFO history, the event is therefore important less as a proven mystery than as a turning point in method. It was one of the first occasions on which Coral Lorenzen tried to transform a local sighting into a structured civilian investigation. The attempt helped define how APRO would operate for decades, while also illustrating how fragile even the most careful eyewitness-based UFO cases could be.
