How Project Sign Treated the Sighting
In 1948 the Air Force had not yet settled on a consistent policy for UFO reports. Project Sign, created in the aftermath of the 1947 flying saucer wave, was still deciding whether such sightings represented misunderstood natural phenomena, secret Soviet technology or something genuinely unknown.

General Hoyt Vandenberg, then Air Force Chief of Staff, reportedly rejected the estimate because the evidence was considered insufficient. Whether the document was as dramatic as later UFO writers claimed remains disputed, but the episode illustrates how seriously at least some military analysts initially treated the case.
This period also marked a turning point in official attitudes. After 1948, Air Force investigations increasingly shifted toward more conservative and sceptical interpretations. The Aquarid Meteor Shower Argument
Harvard astronomer Donald H. Menzel strengthened the meteor explanation by placing the sighting within a broader pattern of meteor activity.
Menzel noted that late July coincides with increased activity from the Delta Aquarid meteor streams. Additional reports of large fireballs over Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina during the same week reinforced the idea that the region was experiencing unusually active meteor conditions. For Menzel, the timing was too strong to ignore. He argued that startled pilots, suddenly confronted by a bright atmospheric object at night, could easily overinterpret its shape and motion. Menzel also pointed out that meteors approaching on a shallow angle can appear to move horizontally or even rise, depending on the observer’s perspective and relative motion. The Scientific Weaknesses in the Meteor Explanation
Despite eventually becoming the Air Force’s preferred explanation, the meteor theory never convinced all researchers.

Another issue involved witness consistency. Although only one passenger saw a bright flash rather than a structured craft, Chiles and Whitted independently produced broadly similar descriptions. Supporters of the unidentified interpretation argued that simultaneous matching perceptions from two experienced pilots deserved more weight than later theoretical reconstructions.
Even so, critics of the UFO interpretation countered that human perception under unexpected night-time conditions is highly unreliable. Modern aviation psychology recognises that speed, distance and size estimation become especially distorted in darkness without stable visual reference points.
