Could the Salem lights be window reflections?
The Salem image is striking, but the fact it was shot through glass makes reflections one of the strongest ordinary explanations.

Introduction
The most persistent sceptical challenge to the famous 1952 Salem Coast Guard photograph is also one of its simplest: the image was taken through a window. For believers, the photograph appears to show four bright objects flying in formation over Salem, Massachusetts. For critics, the fact that the camera was pointed through glass introduces a major uncertainty that the photograph itself cannot eliminate. Decades after the event, window reflections remain one of the strongest ordinary explanations proposed by investigators, including analysts connected with Project Blue Book. The debate matters because the Salem image is often presented as one of the earliest and most striking daylight UFO photographs, yet its evidential value depends heavily on whether the lights were actually outside the building at all. Why the window matters
The basic problem is straightforward. A camera records light, but a single photograph cannot always show where that light originated. When a picture is taken through glass, bright sources inside or near the building can appear superimposed onto the outdoor scene. Depending on focus, angle and exposure, those reflections may look detached from the window itself.
In the Salem case, Coast Guard photographer Shell Alpert was reportedly working inside a photographic laboratory when he noticed the lights and took the picture through a window. The presence of the window was never a minor detail. It became central to later attempts to explain the image because it created a plausible route for ordinary light sources to appear as aerial objects. Project Blue Book analysts repeatedly returned to this issue. While the case remained officially unresolved, later reviews argued that reflected lights offered a more convincing explanation than unknown craft. One Air Force assessment suggested the objects were probably reflections of street lamps or similar light sources on the glass. Other reviews focused on interior lighting within the room itself. The importance of the window is therefore not merely technical. If the bright shapes were reflections, then the photograph would cease to be evidence of distant objects in the sky and instead become an example of a common photographic illusion.
Interior and ground-light reflection theories
The reflection argument developed along two related lines.
Interior light reflections
One theory proposed that lights inside the Coast Guard building reflected from the window and were recorded by the camera. Investigators noted that cameras focused on distant scenery often render nearby reflections as soft, glowing blobs rather than sharp shapes. Because the camera lens is adjusted for the outdoor background, reflected lights on the glass can become distorted and appear suspended beyond the window. [saturdaynightuforia.com]saturdaynightuforia.comThe Photographer's TaleConclusion: It is believed that the photos represent light reflections from an interior source (probably the ceili…
A later Blue Book analysis reportedly concluded that the most likely source was an interior light, probably ceiling fixtures. According to that assessment, the camera’s focus settings would naturally blur the reflected lights into the kind of bright oval forms visible in the photograph. [saturdaynightuforia.com]saturdaynightuforia.comThe Photographer's TaleConclusion: It is believed that the photos represent light reflections from an interior source (probably the ceili…
Supporters of this explanation point out that the objects do not display obvious structural details. They appear mainly as bright luminous patches. That is consistent with the appearance of out-of-focus reflections and makes it difficult to determine their true distance from the camera.
Reflections from ground lights
Another version of the reflection theory suggested that lights outside at ground level, such as street lamps, could have bounced off the glass and created the apparent formation. Blue Book references to street-lamp reflections became one of the best-known sceptical interpretations of the case. This possibility gained attention because the photograph includes industrial features and lighting infrastructure in the wider scene. If strong light sources existed at the correct angle relative to the window and camera, their reflected images might have appeared higher in the frame than their real locations.
The challenge is that later researchers have never been able to reconstruct the exact geometry of the room, window, lighting and photographer’s position with complete certainty. As a result, the reflection explanation remains plausible rather than conclusively demonstrated.
What investigators thought they saw
The reflection hypothesis was not created decades later by internet sceptics. It emerged during official examination of the case.
Blue Book records indicate that investigators experimented with ways ordinary lights could create similar photographic effects. Internal reviews reportedly shifted between different conventional explanations, including suggestions of double exposure and reflected lighting. Eventually, reflection scenarios became one of the leading non-extraordinary interpretations. [The Odyssey Online]theodysseyonline.com10 astounding ufo photos9. One frequently cited point from later analysis concerned witness observations about the brightness of the objects. According to accounts reproduced by researchers, the apparent lights changed in intensity depending on viewing position inside the room. That behaviour would be expected if reflections were involved because reflected images often brighten or fade as an observer moves relative to the glass surface. To sceptics, this detail is more revealing than the photograph itself. A reflection can seem fixed in the outside world until a viewer changes position and notices the illusion. Reports that the lights varied with movement therefore strengthened the reflection argument.
What one photograph cannot rule out
The Salem image demonstrates a recurring problem in UFO photography: a striking photograph is not necessarily a decisive one.
A single frame cannot show motion, distance, altitude or depth. It cannot establish whether a bright object was hundreds of metres away in the sky or a few centimetres away on a pane of glass. Without multiple photographs, independent camera angles or precise measurements of the scene, investigators are forced to infer what happened from limited visual information.
Several uncertainties remain:
- The original scene was captured in only one known photograph rather than a sequence.
- The image provides no direct depth information.
- The exact lighting conditions inside the room are imperfectly documented.
- The geometry of the window, camera position and nearby light sources cannot now be reconstructed with certainty.
- The visible shapes are bright and diffuse rather than sharply defined. These limitations do not prove that the lights were reflections. They simply mean the photograph cannot exclude that possibility.
Why the reflection debate still survives
The Salem photograph occupies an unusual place in Massachusetts UFO history because neither side can fully close the case.
Those who favour an unexplained interpretation note that the image was taken by a Coast Guard photographer during the major 1952 UFO wave and entered into official government files. They argue that no reflection source has ever been demonstrated beyond doubt. [National Archives]archives.govNational Archives Project BLUE BOOKThe project closed in 1969 and we have no…Read more…
Sceptics respond that the burden of proof works the other way around. Since the photograph was taken through glass, and since reflections are a well-known photographic artefact, the image never established that the lights were external objects in the first place. The reflection explanation does not need to identify every detail perfectly to remain a serious challenge. [Science Source Prints - Official Website]prints.sciencesource.comScience Source Prints - Official WebsiteSalem Ufo Sighting, 1952 by Science Source7 Jul 2014 — A second analysis by Blue Book concluded t…
That tension explains why the Salem photograph remains discussed more than seventy years later. Its strongest visual evidence and its strongest weakness may be the same thing. The photograph is memorable because of the four bright lights, yet the window between the camera and the sky leaves open the possibility that the most mysterious objects in the frame originated much closer to the photographer than they appeared.
