The photographs were made during the bomber’s involvement in the incident and were preserved within the broader documentary record. Unlike a conventional camera image, a radarscope photograph records electronic returns displayed on a circular screen. Bright spots or traces represent reflected radar energy rather than visible objects. This distinction is crucial. The core dispute is not whether a radar echo existed. It is whether the echo was extraordinary.
Project Blue Book and later sceptical assessments generally favoured combinations of conventional explanations. These included possible anomalous propagation, in which unusual atmospheric conditions bend radar energy and create misleading returns. In radar work, anomalous propagation can sometimes make distant objects appear where they are not expected, or produce echoes that seem detached from their true source. However, ruling out one explanation does not automatically prove another. Radar specialists often emphasise that historical radar evidence is difficult to evaluate when only photographs survive and the original electronic data no longer exist. Modern analysts cannot replay the raw signal, inspect equipment calibration or reconstruct atmospheric conditions with complete confidence. The photographs preserve the display output, not the entire radar environment that produced it.

At the same time, the photographs also demonstrate the limits of historical UFO evidence. They show why instrument records are not automatically self-explanatory. Understanding them requires knowledge of radar modes, aircraft procedures, beam geometry, display interpretation and chronology.
