Using dates, shapes and places without overclaiming
The most responsible way to use the New Hampshire NUFORC archive is to look for patterns while avoiding assumptions about causes.
Dates can reveal shared events
If multiple reports appear from the same evening across different towns, investigators can compare them with known meteor showers, satellite trains, military exercises, rocket launches or unusual weather conditions.
A cluster does not automatically imply a single unknown object. Sometimes it simply shows that many people noticed the same ordinary event from different locations. Shape categories are often less precise than they appear
The shape labels can be misleading if treated too literally. A witness who reports a “triangle” may have seen three lights whose connecting structure was not actually visible. A “cylinder” may be an aircraft viewed from a particular angle. A “fireball” may be a meteor.
The categories are valuable because they help organise reports, but they do not establish that all objects with the same label share the same origin. Locations can point towards investigation priorities
Places matter, but not always in the way enthusiasts expect.
A concentration of reports around Manchester may reflect population density, air traffic and the presence of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport rather than an unusual concentration of unexplained craft. Reports along the Seacoast may be influenced by aircraft approaching or departing regional airports, while mountain and lake regions provide darker skies that make celestial objects more noticeable. The location data therefore help identify where follow-up research should begin, not where conclusions should end.
A useful example: when a strange report became less mysterious
One of the clearest demonstrations of the database’s strengths and weaknesses comes from a 2025 report from Ossipee. The witness described a large, shiny metallic cylinder seen over Pine River State Forest for roughly ten minutes. On first reading, the account resembles a classic UFO narrative.
Yet the entry also contains an explanation field marking the object as “Aircraft - Certain”. The witness account remained in the archive, but the later assessment significantly changed how the case should be interpreted. This does not prove the witness was mistaken in every detail. Instead, it illustrates why investigators should treat initial reports as starting points. The sighting became more informative after review than it was at the moment of submission.
What New Hampshire researchers can realistically learn
