Visual perception challenges over open water

Why Hawaii’s atmosphere can distort lights
The ocean itself changes how light behaves. Hawaii’s warm air, cooler marine layers and rapidly shifting humidity conditions can produce atmospheric refraction — the bending of light as it passes through air layers of different temperatures.

Several conditions make these distortions especially relevant in Hawaii:

This becomes crucial in reports claiming that a UFO “entered the ocean”. Witnesses often interpret disappearance as impact. But from a visual-perception standpoint, several less dramatic explanations are possible:
- the light simply moved beyond visible range;
- the object passed behind low cloud or haze;
- atmospheric refraction altered its apparent altitude;
- the observer lost contrast against the dark sea background.
