For investigators, these factors mean that sincere testimony alone is no longer enough to establish that a line-of-lights sighting represents something unexplained.
What evidence would keep a line-of-lights case unresolved
The rise of Starlink has not made unidentified aerial reports impossible. It has simply raised the threshold for what counts as genuinely puzzling.
A Lake Champlain line-of-lights report would remain more difficult to explain if several of the following conditions were met:
- No Starlink or other satellite pass matched the time and direction.
- The lights showed abrupt manoeuvres inconsistent with orbital motion.

- The objects displayed clear altitude changes or apparent interaction with one another.
