Why counts can mislead readers
The most common misunderstanding is treating the number of reports as the number of unexplained events.
A headline stating that Virginia has more than 2,600 reported UFO sightings sounds dramatic, but the figure mainly tells readers how many reports were entered into the database. Several factors distort simple state-by-state totals:
- Population size and urban concentration. Areas with more residents naturally produce more observers and more potential reports.

Media spikes and reporting waves
Raw counts become even harder to interpret during periods of intense media attention.

How probable explanations change a sighting’s value
A second problem with raw counts is that they treat all reports as if they have equal evidential weight.
In reality, Virginia entries range from potentially interesting aviation observations to reports that appear consistent with satellites, aircraft, balloons, planets or other familiar causes. One useful example comes from a Charlottesville report filed in 2025. The witness was using astronomical equipment when an object crossed the field of view. The NUFORC entry later carried a “Satellite - Probable” explanation. The report remains part of Virginia’s sighting total, but its value as evidence for an unexplained event changes substantially once a plausible explanation is attached. When readers focus only on totals, these distinctions disappear. A short ambiguous light in the sky counts the same as a detailed report from multiple witnesses, even though the evidential value is very different.
What makes a Virginia report more significant than a simple count

The key point is that report counts measure reporting activity, not confirmed mysteries. A rise in sightings may reflect attention, visibility, demographics or reporting behaviour as much as any underlying phenomenon.
