A light in the night sky looks simple, but the brain normally relies on surrounding objects to estimate how far away it is. Remove those references and strange impressions quickly emerge.

- Exact time and date.
- Viewing location.
- Direction of travel.
- Compass bearing.
- Approximate elevation above the horizon.
- Duration of the observation.
- Weather and cloud conditions.
Many UFO reports lack several of these details. That does not make the witnesses unreliable, but it makes later identification much harder.
