Introduction
Virgil Been’s 1947 flying saucer report occupies a small but revealing place in North Dakota’s UFO history. The incident was not a major military case, did not generate a formal investigation, and left behind only a thin documentary trail. Yet it shows how the national flying saucer scare of summer 1947 entered local memory through newspapers, family testimony and repeated retellings. What made the story endure was not the strength of the evidence but the way it linked a rural Ransom County sighting to a nationwide wave of reports that was already reshaping how Americans described unusual things in the sky. In later accounts, the sighting became a useful example of how North Dakota joined the first great post-war saucer craze. The case illustrates a broader pattern seen throughout the state’s UFO history: a brief local report gains a longer life because newspapers frame it as part of a larger mystery. The Ransom County witness account
According to the account later preserved by Prairie Public’s Dakota Datebook, Virgil Been of Elliott in Ransom County reported seeing a green object above his mother’s barn during the Independence Day weekend of 1947. The object was described as roughly the size and shape of a dinner plate. Been, identified as a US Navy veteran, said that his brother and mother also saw it as it passed overhead at high speed. The report placed the object only a short distance above the barn, with estimates of roughly 30 to 40 feet in altitude. The description itself was simple. There were no claims of alien occupants, landing traces, strange sounds or long observation periods. Instead, the story centred on a fast-moving green disc seen by several members of the same family. That detail helped distinguish it from purely solitary witness reports, even though there was no independent documentation beyond newspaper coverage. Later UFO catalogues preserved the case in abbreviated form. The 1967 study Report on the UFO Wave of 1947 by Ted Bloecher included the Elliott, North Dakota report among hundreds of sightings collected from the nationwide saucer wave. In that catalogue, the case appears as one small entry within a much larger pattern of reports spreading across the United States during July 1947. How the Fargo Forum framed the story
The lasting importance of the Been sighting comes largely from how it was reported. Prairie Public’s reconstruction of the event notes that the Fargo Forum ran a prominent headline: “Report: ‘Flying Saucer’ Seen in N.D.” The wording immediately connected a local observation to a national news phenomenon that was only a few weeks old. The timing mattered. Kenneth Arnold’s famous June 1947 sighting near Mount Rainier had already introduced the phrase “flying saucer” into newspapers across the country. Editors were actively searching for local examples that could be attached to the new story. As a result, Been’s observation was not presented merely as an odd object above a barn. It was presented as North Dakota’s contribution to an emerging national mystery. Contemporary stories linked flying discs to everything from secret military projects to atomic-age experiments. Prairie Public’s account notes that reports from other states and speculation involving atomic research appeared in the same news environment as the Been story. This framing is important because it shows how local memory was created. Readers did not encounter the Elliott sighting in isolation. They encountered it as evidence that North Dakota had become part of a national event.
Why 1947 saucer language shaped later memories
The Been report emerged during what historians of UFO culture often call the 1947 flying disc or flying saucer craze. After Arnold’s report, newspapers rapidly adopted the phrase “flying saucer”, and witnesses increasingly used that language when describing unusual aerial objects. The term became a ready-made category through which people interpreted ambiguous observations. [Wikipedia]Wikipedia1947 flying disc craze1947 flying disc craze
That context affects how modern readers should understand the Elliott case. By early July 1947, Americans had already been exposed to days of dramatic headlines about mysterious discs. Reports were multiplying across the country, ranging from pilot sightings to stories later exposed as misunderstandings or hoaxes. Some observations remained unexplained, while others were attributed to balloons, astronomical objects, aircraft or misperception. In practical terms, the language of the saucer wave gave witnesses a vocabulary. A fast-moving object that might previously have been described simply as a strange light or unidentified object could now be called a flying saucer. The Been sighting therefore tells historians as much about public perception in 1947 as it does about whatever was actually seen above the barn. What can and cannot be known about the sighting
The surviving evidence is limited. No photographs, physical traces, official investigative records or detailed witness interviews are known to have survived in public circulation. Most later references ultimately trace back to newspaper reporting from the summer of 1947 and subsequent historical summaries. [Prairie Public]news.prairiepublic.orgPrairie Public The Night of the Flying SaucersPrairie PublicThe Night of the Flying SaucersMay 26, 2022 — 26 May 2022 — “Those mysterious 'flying saucers' which observers have reporte…
That leaves several possibilities open:
- The family may have witnessed an unusual but ordinary object whose appearance was distorted by distance, lighting or speed.
- The estimates of size, altitude and shape may have been affected by the difficulty of judging aerial objects.
- The report may accurately preserve a genuinely unexplained observation without providing enough information for a modern assessment.
Because the documentation is so sparse, none of these possibilities can be proven. The case remains an example of an unresolved but weakly evidenced sighting rather than a strong UFO incident. Why the story still appears in North Dakota UFO history
The Been sighting survives because it captures a historical moment. It shows the exact point at which a global-sounding idea — the flying saucer — entered a local North Dakota setting. A family near Elliott reported a strange object, a newspaper gave it a headline, and later historians of regional culture preserved the story as one of the state’s earliest saucer accounts. Within North Dakota’s wider UFO record, the case serves less as evidence of an extraordinary craft and more as evidence of how public memory formed. Later generations looking back at UFO history often remember dramatic military incidents, radar cases or famous national mysteries. The Been report shows a quieter process: a rural observation becoming part of a shared narrative because local newspapers decided it belonged to the flying saucer story unfolding across America in 1947.
