Introduction
Project Sign’s investigation of the Fargo “dogfight” became one of the most closely watched UFO inquiries of the late 1940s because it involved a trained military pilot, multiple witnesses and a rapid Air Force response. After North Dakota Air National Guard pilot George Gorman reported chasing a bright light over Fargo on 1 October 1948, investigators arrived within hours to interview witnesses and inspect his F-51 Mustang. At first, some of the evidence appeared unusual enough to encourage speculation that Gorman had encountered something genuinely unknown. Yet the same investigation eventually moved in the opposite direction.
