This matters because pumice and industrial waste can superficially resemble something unusual. Pumice is lightweight, porous and can appear strange to non-specialists. Industrial slag, a glassy waste product left over from metal smelting and heavy industry, can also look unfamiliar, especially when found in irregular chunks.

Why the slag explanation became persuasive
The slag explanation gained traction for several reasons beyond simple scepticism.
First, there was no verified laboratory result showing unusual composition. No surviving analysis demonstrated exotic alloys, unknown isotopes or technology beyond contemporary manufacturing. For a case famous because of its alleged physical evidence, that absence is striking.

Army Air Forces intelligence officers examined material connected with the case. Two officers later died in a B-25 crash while returning from Washington.
