Introduction
Many modern UFO reports in North Carolina begin with a simple but surprisingly powerful visual problem: a bright aircraft on approach to an airport can look nothing like an ordinary aeroplane. Seen from the ground at night, a landing aircraft may appear motionless, unusually large, triangular, silent, or impossibly bright. In some cases witnesses genuinely believe they are watching an object hover over a city or remain fixed in one position for several minutes.
This matters because some of North Carolina’s busiest UFO-reporting areas sit directly beneath major flight corridors. Why triangular UFO reports often overlap with aircraft lighting

Distance estimation becomes critical here. If a witness assumes the object is relatively close, the apparent size can seem enormous. If the aircraft is actually several miles away on approach, the perceived dimensions become much smaller and more ordinary.

Were there multiple witnesses from different locations?
